Motec Displays and Dashlogger

Motec Dashlogger C185 and C187 Motec Display / Datalogger C127

Additional to misc. motor control units, the Australian motorsport specialist Motec offers a broad range of high class racing displays and dashlogger. Since 2013 Aamgard Engineering sells Motec products, builds wiring looms and develops electrics and setups for these systems.

Therefore we find great support at the company Brückle Motorsport Consulting. With more than twenty years of experience, owner Werner Brückle is one of the European Motec partners from the very start. Thanks a lot for the extraordinary good co-operation!

Conservative Technology - Fresh Thinking:   Battery Cut-Off Relays from Kissling

There are different possibilities for emergency cut-off of a racecar battery:

  • cut-off switches with mechanical activating
  • electronic solid-state cut-off modules
  • electromagnetic high power cut-off relays

Kissling battery cut-off switch by Aamgard Engineering

The first solution, in motorsports also used to be called ''The Bone'' needs a bowden cable across the vehicle to be operated equally by driver and from outside the car. Advantages: Simple, cheap, easy and proven technology.

Solid-State electronic switches have the great advantage, that they are small in dimensions and could be mounted nearly anywhere inside the car. For operating, only small push buttons with low-current wires are needed. Disadvantage: Even the budget modules are not very reliable. Neither they do provide real galvanic cut-off between battery, alternator and system electrics. So, after accidents there is a remaining risk of arcing even after tripping. In most cases, we avoid to use that products.

For test bed applications or for classic racing cars we suggest the third solution: Battery cut-off relays from the German manufacturer Kissling. These components are sturdy, have breaking capacities up to 1000 Amp, offer misc. configurations regarding main and supporting contacts and ensure full galvanic cut-off.

Rapid-Prototyping:   Yes, We Three Dee

Primarily planned to build design space samples, tools and auxiliaries, meanwhile we also build prototype and small volume parts with our 3D printer

3D printer from Craft Unique

After careful consideration, a dual-head FDM printer of manufacturer Craft Unique has been purchased. Print quality, dimensional accuracy and reliability are good by now. Indeed, also we had to pay dearly: There were nearly no problems with calibration and accuracy from the beginning, but a lot of trouble with filament feeding. The original spool holder is simply waste. So, we had to build a new one - something what may not be necessary at this price class.

Some further ''Gremlins'' in hardware and software had to be resolved or are of minor importance for daily work. Conclusio: Today, 3D printing at semi-pro level is still no self-selling system. But with a little skill, printers at medium price levels could be convinced to produce very appropriate results.

Tiny, but Shiny:   Electronic Blinker Relay from Aamgard Engineering

Weight nearly to nothing, mounting space close to zero and mainly unbreakable: Electronic blinker relay from Aamgard Engineering. Three pins: Plus - minus - blinker lamp output. 8 Ampere pulse load. The blink frequency is load independent, so working the same for bulb lamps and modern LED indicator lamps.

Restoration Project:   Ex Kremer Porsche 962

Kremer Porsche 962-CK6 in Eau Rouge

As successor of the Porsche 956, the 962 was that one Porsche customer prototype sportscar of the eighties. Nearly onehundred cars of the Porsche 962 have been build. Most of them where used by privat racing teams, mostly at the prototype world championship and the American IMSA sportc car champinoship.

Like others, the Cologne based team Kremer Racing has advanced the original 962 and built about a dozen of these cars, raced and sold all around the world. Today, one of that ex-Kremer cars is property of Dortmund based gentleman racing team DMH Motorsport. Last year it has been totally restored. Engine and engine electrics have been revised by French specialist Lorrtec. Aamgard Engineering was responsible for the chassis looms, the dashboard electronics and the lighting system. Hereby, with use of modern materials, we were able to reduce the overall weight of the electrics by approx. 8kg.

Form Follows Function:   An Artful Dashboard is Made

Building a new dashboard for a classic Le mans prototype is no rocket science. But to get an aesthetic, functional and enduring part, even matching the historic artwork, some attention to details is required.

finished dashboard

For the carrier plates our customer asked about carbon fibre material - not exactly true to original but due to the tremendous aesthetics a perfect fit. Since the genuine signal lamps are no longer available, we carefully modified look-alike parts and painted them black. Also the starter button. The dip switches are high-grade ITW products with matching rubber caps. The rev counter is a modern but classical looking dial gauge from Stack, very close to the original part.

Unlike the old cabling, we used modern automotive wires and Deutsch resp. Souriau interconnectors. Missing on the photo are the capillary tube gauges for coolant temperature and engine oil pressure. Both have been fitted to the dashboard at customers site later.

Build, wiring and final assembly, each left to right:

  • carbon fibre carrier rear side view, assembled with switches and signal lamps
  • dashboard front view, assembly ready for electric wiring
  • electric cabling work in progress at the three single dashboard segments
  • new electrics completed and mounted inside a classic Le Mans sportscar
  • classic-style Aamgard dashboard with modern technology, ready for the next thirty years

The overall weight of the dashboard has been reduced from any above 3kg down to 1,8kg.

Bright and Reliable:   Conversion of Classic Rear Lamps to LED Technology

One of our latest projects has been the renewal of a Porsche 962 Le Mans sportscars electrics. With that matter, the 'tractor style' rear lights commonly used for endurance prototypes of the eighties, have been retrofitted to modern LED technology. The converted lamps are now watertight (IP67+), do have a reliable Deutsch ASL connector and are obviously brighter than the old bulb lamps. For endurance cars also important: The electric power consumption is more than halved.
